The word ‘religion’ means a
system of faith and worship. The Hindu word ‘Dharma’ has much deeper and
wider meaning than the word religion. Derived from the Sanskrit root
‘dhri’ (to hold) Dharma stands for the rules of coexistence, acts and
deeds worth doing and not worth doing and all activities that lead to
self-elevation and social uplift. Thus non-violence is supreme dharma.
Mercy is highest virtue. Some other features of dharma are mentioned
below:
-
To keep fortitude in adversity
-
To forgive the guilty
-
To observe physical and mental
cleanliness
-
To engage mind and intellect
in good thoughts
-
To attain right knowledge
-
Adherence to truth
-
Not to steal
-
To restrain one’s sensual
impulses
-
To subdue one’s anger
-
Not to engage in evil deeds
